YOung people are being given a helping hand to dive into the world of work with the help of a pioneering new course.
Arbeia Diving, based in Portberry Street, Laygate, South Shields, has joined forces with Sunderland-based Fortitude Training.
Together, trainers from both companies have devised a full-time course aimed at 16-18 year-olds to help them towards gaining qualifications in Outdoor Activity Leadership.
The course is carried out over 20 weeks and combines academic study with scuba diving lessons as well as work placement.
Those embarking on the course will also complete a number of diving qualifications endorsed by the Professional Association of Diving Instructors.
The family-run dive centre offers PADI courses from novice to advanced and beyond as well as the chance to try out diving before committing to a course for both groups and individuals.
Owner Rob Mackins said: “To the best of my knowledge, this pioneering course is the only one of its kind in the country and we are in discussion with leading diving equipment manufacturers to sponsor this course.”
Fortitude Training, which is based at North Sands Business Centre, Sunderland, offers a range of courses including first aid, working children, customer service, healthcare and military preparation.
Managing director of Fortitude Training, Sonia Dutton, said: “We are really thrilled to be working with a local business in developing a course that will really prepare young people for work in this exciting industry.
“This is just the first of a number of vocational courses we are developing.”
