A YOUNG businessman who took over the running of an established timber company is celebrating his first year in charge.
Daniel Gaffney, aged 21, says the past 12 months has been challenging but rewarding as owner of Wooden Huts.
Since taking over the business, which is based in West Walpole Street, South Shields, last year, he has seen his client base widen and hopes the future will continue to look bright.
Mr Gaffney, said: “I’ve had the business for just over a year now and it has been good.
“I have had a lot people coming down. Having my own business is a huge responsibility and a lot of hard work.
“I had been doing an apprenticeship at the time and had to give it up to take on the business. It was quite challenging as I went from being told what to do, to running a business with staff. I really do have the best people working alongside me.”
He added: “It has been challenging at times but this is what I want to do. I’ve given up a lot to make this happen.”
Mr Gaffney was told about the business – which had been operating for the past 30 years – by a friend.
After talking his idea through with his family, he decided to go for it.
Mr Gaffney added: “I’ve received a lot of support from my family and they have come down and helped out when they could when I first took over.”
Last month, the company offered its support to injured soldier Jason Burns, who was left relying on mobility aids after severely injuring his back while on a tour of duty in Afghanistan in 2011.
The 44-year-old had contacted Wooden Huts for a new shed to store his mobility scooter. But after hearing of his plight, Mr Gaffney decided he wanted to make a gift of the shed and set about contacting various suppliers to help with the materials.
The firm specialises in a range of garden products from basic wooden planters to summer houses.
It also offers a bespoke service, with customers able to bring in their own design ideas.
Wooden Hut supplies and delivers its products in flat pack form, or customers can decide to have their hut built ready for use.
It is open between 8am and 5pm, Monday to Friday and from 9am until 4pm on Saturday.
