There was nothing unlucky for 13 young people taken on as trainees and apprentices at a expanding South Tyneside marine and offshore manufacturer.

MCPS Ltd, on the Middlefields Industrial Estate, South Shields, recently launched a recruitment drive.

A shortlist of candidates was drawn up and now a baker’s dozen of new employees have opportunities in a variety of areas, including engineering, manufacturing, IT, sales and business administration.

Rising Star, sister company to Hebburn-based recruitment consultancy Zenith People, selected the 13 young people through an innovative and unique selection process.

The aim was to find the right calibre of candidates and to equip them with the correct work behaviours and develop key skills needed for success.

John Clafton, human resources manager at MCPS Ltd, said: “As a significant employer in the area, we take pride in the calibre of employees we recruit.

“MCPS has therefore utilised the services of Rising Star to select prospective apprentices and trainees and put them through comprehensive training and a week-long ‘selection centre’, so as to select the most suitable candidates for the vacant positions in our organisation.

“I have found all the Rising Star personnel to be of an extremely high calibre and very professional in their approach not only to our company, but also in their dealings with the applicants to the positions.

“The quality of the short-listed candidates selected for final interview with myself was of a very high standard.”

Jodie Kenny, who secured a manufacturing apprenticeship within the company’s Quality Assurance department, said: “These kind of opportunities don’t come around very often and now 13 young people, including myself, have been giving a great starting block to having a successful career for a fantastic company.”

Rising Star and Zenith People training operations manager, Lisa Waller, said: “MCPS is one of South Tyneside’s leading employers, so of course we are delighted when they chose us to help them select their trainees and apprentices.

“We advertised their roles and worked with the applicants, and in the end they had really difficult choices to make between our short-listed candidates. That’s always a good sign we’ve done our job well.”

Rising Star is actively working with a number of the region’s top employers and is currently in the process of recruiting 10 junior welders for Caterpillar in Peterlee.
