FREE parking for shoppers is coming to South Shields town centre – in a one-day bid to support local traders.
South Tyneside folk are being urged to support local traders this weekend on Small Business Saturday.
Council chiefs are encouraging folk to spend their festive funds at the borough’s small and independent shops as part of the national campaign, to support family and online businesses, local shops, wholesalers and small manufacturers.
To help attract trade, the local authority has also extended its ‘Free After 3’ Christmas parking initiative to cover all day on Saturday.
Coun John Anglin, lead member for regeneration and economy, said: “It’s been a challenging few years for retail and it’s important that we support our traders by shopping local this Christmas, and beyond.
“Independent and small, specialist stores bring individuality and character to our high streets and other shopping areas.
“Many of our local shops and market stalls will be running special offers as part of Small Business Saturday, so it’s a great opportunity for people to pick up a festive bargain.”
Among those hoping Small Business Saturday will boost trade is Susan Harris, who runs Knit ‘n’ Purl in South Shields’ Market Place.
She said: “Small Business Saturday is a great way of highlighting the range of different shops that there is here in the Borough and for people to show their support for traders on their doorsteps.
“We’ll have several promotions running on the day plus refreshments for customers, so I’d encourage people to come along and make the most of the offers.”
