A towering arrival has appeared on the skyline of South Shields town centre.

A huge tower crane has been erected to enable construction of The Word, the North East Centre for the Written Word, a three-storey structure in Ferry Street which will incorporate a library and digital hub.

The giant crane will help with construction of The Word, the North East Centre for the Written Word, a three-storey structure in Ferry Street which will incorporate a library and digital hub.

The crane will service the site during the main superstructure build which takes place over the next six to eight months.

Coun John Anglin, the council’s lead member for regeneration and economy, said work on The Word was on schedule, adding: “The arrival of the crane marks a major milestone in the project and the start of the main superstructure build.

“Construction of The Word is right on schedule. Delivery of the South Shields 365 town centre masterplan will help to cement South Shields as a year-round tourist destination.”
