The former Mecca Bingo, Dean Road, has been put up for auction.

It will be ‘eyes down’ for bidders at an auction next week when an iconic South Tyneside building goes up for sale for £175,000.

The Mecca Bingo Hall in Dean Road, South Shields, closed on September 14 last year after bosses decided not to renew its lease. The closure was part of Gala Bingo’s long-term policy of closing older buildings.

The building, originally the Regent cinema –which opened in 1935 – will be sold at Leeds United’s Elland Road ground by auctioneers Pugh next Tuesday.

A spokesman for auctioneers Pugh said: “The property is considered to have development potential subject to obtaining the necessary consents.”
