A POST Office is making a welcome return to a busy South Tyneside shopping street.
A new branch is set to open soon at Golds Pharmacy, in Prince Edward Road, South Shields.
I know a lot of people will be please that once again there will be a Post Office branch at the Nook.Coun Jim Foreman
The previous Post Office, which was located a few doors along, closed last summer and residents have had to travel further a field to post their parcels.
Coun Jim Foreman, the Cleadon Park ward’s Labour representative, said: “I know a lot of people will be pleased that once again there will be a Post Office branch at The Nook.
“When the other one closed down last summer, it was a big miss.
“I know a lot of people ended up having to travel down to the town centre if they wanted to post something, so this will make life much easier.
“I also think shop owners will welcome its return as it will mean they can swap change and perhaps carry out their business needs.”
The service will be open from 9am to 5.30pm, Monday to Saturday.
The new open-plan office will have four counter positions; two new style open-plan counters, one secure fortress position and a terminal by the shop’s retail till
There will also be range of services available including special delivery, local collect, home shopping returns, online banking cash deposits and withdrawals.
The date for the opening has yet to be confirmed, but posters will be displayed in the branch nearer to the time.
Sheila McCann, regional manager, said: “We are making it easier for customers to get their cash, send and collect their mail and do their banking because we know how important these services are to local residents.”
She added: “We are confident that this vibrant new-style Post Office at the heart of the local community will meet customer needs. This modernisation is part of a major investment programme, the largest in the history of the Post Office, and will secure services for the future. The investment marks a commitment to our no more branch closure programme”.
