STAFF at Tesco stores across South Tyneside can breath a sigh of relief after an uncertain few weeks.
Earlier this month, the supermarket giant announced plans to axe dozens of stores nationwide.
The firm had not disclosed the locations of the 43 stores to close. Tesco has two Express stores in South Tyneside, in Seawinnings Way and Prince Edward Road, but yesterday it emerged that they are not to be axed.
Shopworkers’ union Usdaw union said it was a “worrying and difficult time” for members and that it had arranged meetings to begin discussions on Tesco’s plans.
Pauline Foulkes, Usdaw National Officer, said: “This is devastating news for over 2,000 dedicated staff in the 43 Tesco stores across the UK, who have worked hard to make their shop viable during a difficult time for the company.
“We will enter into full and meaningful consultation meetings on this proposal, where we will look closely at the business case for the closures. Our priority is to maximise employment in Tesco, seek redeployment opportunities and to keep job losses to a minimum.”
