A South Shields travel agent is celebrating 10 years in the same spot.
Westoe Travel moved into its premises in Westoe Road on July 4, 2005.
We’re going to have a big family barbecue next week and it’s our wedding anniversary this weekend too so we’ve got a lot to celebrate.Graeme Brett, owner
The business itself is 26 years old, having started in the family’s newsagents, also in Westoe Road.
Three generations of the Brett family are now involved.
Graeme Brett, who owns the shop with his wife Joan, said: “We had been in business for 16 years then and decided we needed bigger premises.
“We found a shop nearer to our previous shop and everything went to plan. We arranged to open on our wedding anniversary and American Independence Day.
“We opened with lots of themed offers to USA, Australia, Canada and London.”
The business is now run by Graeme and Joan, along with their son Martin, daughter Gillian, and staff members Alice Appleby and Megan Kelly.
During the last decade, the travel agents has picked up numerous awards, including the Brits Travel Award and has been recognised by Tourism Australia, Destination Canada and Tourism New Zealand as specialists.
Graeme added: “It’s a big milestone for the business.
“Last year we celebrated our 25th anniversary and this year is the 10th in our current premises.
“We started off with a little desk in the back of the newsagents and when it grew we opened the shop.
“It’s fantastic that the business has grown so much in that time and we hope that it continues to grow.
“We’re going to have a big family barbecue next week and it’s our wedding anniversary this weekend too, so we’ve got a lot to celebrate.”
Westoe Travel regularly is involved in the local community and events.
The business recently sponsored a talent show at the Customs House in South Shields, offering the winners a £500 trip to London.
Graeme said: “We love being in South Shields and being a part of the community.
“We always enjoy getting involved in local events in the community. We really feel like a part of South Shields.”
