HOLIDAYMAKERS can now head to Mexico from the North East after a travel firm added new flights to Cancun.

Thomson and First Choice are introducing fortnightly flights to the Latin American holiday hotspot as well as extra capacity on other services from Newcastle International Airport in summer 2016.

The holiday company says the move to introduce the routes is part of its strategy to ensure customers across the UK can fly from their nearest airport.

The new routes will go on sale on the 23rd April 2015.

Thomson and First Choice said customers can also choose varying durations of holiday, with seven, 14, 10 and 11-night durations to Naples, Italy.

Karen Switzer, director of Aviation Planning for Thomson and First Choice, said of the move: “Adding more capacity from the North East of the England and the addition of a new fortnightly flight to Cancun demonstrates our commitment to Newcastle Airport and the local area.

“Following the success of similar routes across a number of regional airports, we know that the demand is there.

“Expanding access to our portfolio of destinations and hotels is a key part of our overall strategy and we hope that this move will enhance the holiday experience for our customers.”

David Laws, chief executive of Newcastle Airport, said: “We are excited by these additions to Thomson and First Choice’s summer 2016 programme from Newcastle. Cancun offers easy access to Mexico’s Caribbean coast and this additional capacity means even more people can take advantage of non-stop flights from Newcastle on the Dreamliner.

“The extra weekly flight to Naples brings more choice of holiday durations and further increases the appeal of this part of Italy for summer holidays.”
