DIY chain B&Q has confirmed its South Shields store will close.
The announcement comes after rumours the branch may be among those set to be axed as part of a national closure programme.
The firm had already confirmed stories in Sunderland and Hartlepool will close earlier in the week.
Staff may be found jobs in other branches, but now face an uncertain future.
A B&Q spokesman said: “We have let colleagues at our Sunderland, South Shields and Hartlepool stores know that their store is one of those planned for closure next financial year (2016/17).
“Our focus for the coming months is on redeploying as many colleagues as we can within B&Q and the Kingfisher Group.”
