THE date has been set for to elect a new councillor for the Westoe Ward.

The death of Independent councillor Jane McBride – one of the borough’s longest-serving members – in July has sparked a by-election for the ward.

The 66-year-old had lost her battle against lung cancer.

The staunch feminist and trade union activist had gained a reputation as a passionate community campaigner, originally as a Labour councillor and latterly as an independent.

Now, the date to elect her successor has been announced.

The by-election will take place on Thursday October 2.

Those wishing to stand have until 4pm on Friday, September 5 to hand in their nomination papers to the returning officer at the elections office at South Shields Town Hall.

Nomination papers are available from South Shields Town Hall, Monday to Friday between 9.30am and 4.30pm.
