Cable fault sparks power cut in South Shields

A cable fault is believed to have been behind a power cut affecting almost 300 properties in South Tyneside.

Parts of Tyne Dock in South Shields were plunged into darkness after a power cut hit the area at around 4.30pm, today.

Properties were affected for around 40 minutes as work to restore electricity was carried out.

A spokeswoman for Northern Powergrid said: “We were made aware of a fault which affected 293 customers at 4.24pm. We managed to restore power to 76 of those customers using out tele-control facility. The remaining 217 customers had power restored by 5.04pm.

“We believe it was caused by a fault in a cable in the underground network.”
