Campaigners to stage weekly events in fight to save community centre

Lukes Lane Community Centre, in Hebburn, is one of a number needing to find its own cash to stay open after funding was pulled.

While work to try to secure its long-term future gets under way, it is hoped a new community event will help to boost funds.

The weekly get-together sessions have been organised by Jayne Welch after the company she works for, Silvergate Wills, stepped in to sponsor the event.

Starting on April 19, people of all ages are invited to enjoy a few hours of fun, music, activities and free refreshments.

Jayne, who teaches Zumba at the centre, said: “The venue now has to be self-sufficient after funding was cut. There are a number of different classes run, but they are all after 4pm.

“During the day the centre is not used and there is not a lot in the area for older people or mums with little ones.

“This event will help to bring the community together and give them idea of what happens at the centre. And if they would like to, find out more about the wills service offered by Silvergate.

“Ideally, it would be great to have around 20 to 30 people each week. All proceeds will go directly into the running of the centre.”

The social coffee morning runs from 11am until 1.30pm and costs £1.
