Can you help reunite heartbroken schoolboy Kai with his beloved pet?
An autistic schoolboy has been left heartbroken after his beloved parakeet - Mr Basil - went missing.
Kai Davis, 10, from Lumley Terrace, Jarrow, is devastated after his Indian ringneck parakeet went missing over a week ago.
The parrot which was already a rescue bird, escaped on November 13 when Kai’s mum, Teriann Melia, 32, opened the door to the delivery man and he flew out.
Now the family have launched an urgent appeal to find the beloved pet and reunite him with Kai.
The youngster’s auntie, Adele Melia, 31, said Mr Basil has been a big part of the family for a year.
She said: “It is such a shame, as Mr Basil is already a resuce bird who we adopted a year ago. “He is 12 years old and is a really friendly bird.
“He has a massive bond to my nephew Kai, who has autism.” She added: “Mr Basil is such a big part of the family, so it is really important that we get him back.”
The exotic bird is all green in colour, with rings around his neck and has a distinctive bright red beak.
He became part of the family after he was resuced from the Haven Parrot Rescue Centre in Tamworth, Staffordshire.
Ms Melia added: “Mr Basil is very much part of the family, so we never really kept him in a cage.
“He was quite used to roaming free around the house.
“He went missing when my sister opened the door to the delivery man and he just flew past her and got away.
“Everyone loves him so we just want him back.”
