A pensioner who turned detective to track down all the pupils in a 1952 school photograph has one last mystery to solve.
When Bob Johnson was handed a picture by ex-classmate Tommy Heslop 18 months ago it sparked a search.
Tommy had already identified ”about 75 %” of the 35 pupils at Stanhope Road School in South Shields from back in 1952 – many of whom he hadn’t seen for more than half a century.
And retired electrician Bob, 74, of Benton Road, South Shields, was determined to put names to all the remaining faces.
He has managed to identify all but one female pupil, who is proving frustratingly elusive.
She is the young lady, probably aged seven at the time, in the far right corner of the photograph.
I recognise the face but can’t put a name to herBob Johnson
Now Bob hopes that an eagle-eyed Gazette reader can name her – and put him out of his misery.
He said: “It is very frustrating. I recognise the face but I can’t put a name to her. I just hope someone out there can say who she is, then the search will be over.
“I attended Stanhope Road from 1945 to 1955 and I can remember some of the teachers very well, such as Jack Shipley, whose family had Shipley Plumbing on Dean Road.
“There’s people on there that are no longer with us, including the builder Eric Malone, who died a few years ago. He was standing to the left of me in the picture and was a lovely lad.
“After I bumped into Tommy I started asking people I knew were at the school, even if they weren’t in the same class, if they could identify the remaining pupils and I’ve managed to get all but this one girl’s name. It’s the last piece of the jigsaw.
