A LABOUR councillor hit the campaign trail in search of support at the forthcoming local elections.

Coun Arthur Meeks has represented the Bede ward in Jarrow for the last four years.

A father and grandfather, Coun Meeks saw service with both the Army and Merchant Navy.

He was previously a councillor for the Horsley Hill ward, in South Shields, for nine years, before successfully regaining a seat on South Tyneside Council, in the Bede ward.

Coun Meeks met residents in Dundee Court on the Scotch Estate, Jarrow, while on walkabout ahead of the elections on Thursday, May 22.

He said: “Since my election as councillor for the Bede ward four years ago, I have worked closely with residents to ensure that their concerns are addressed, and suggestions on how to improve our community are taken forward.

“As a councillor, I have an excellent record of attendance at council meetings, where I chair the licensing committee, and together with my ward colleagues, Fay Cunningham and Margaret Peacock, we are an effective team, holding regular ward surgeries and attending residents’ association meetings.”

Before he retired, Coun Meeks’ working life included more than 20 years as transport manager at the former Crawford Bakery, at Simonside, and 14 years as head porter at Palmer Community Hospital, Jarrow.

Coun Meeks has several immediate objectives for improving the quality of life for Bede ward residents.

He added: “My main priorities will be completion of the Decent Homes programme for council tenants, continuing with environmental schemes across the ward, and the commencement of a scheme to improve footpaths on the Broseley Estate.

“Good community facilities for young and old alike are also at the top of my agenda for action.”

Also standing for election in the Bede ward are Lee Hughes (Independent) and Oliver Wallhead (Conservative).
