Carnival club proves a hit with Jarrow youngsters

Carnival fever is alive and kicking at a South Tyneside community centre - thanks to a husband and wife team.

Garner and Sandy Harris’ latest venture has been hailed a success as young people descend on Hedworthfield Community Centre on Fridays.

The couple, who run the Creative Seed, now host a Carnival Youth Club, giving youngsters the chance to experience the sights and sounds of the carnival.

Activities include costume making led by Kye Harris, Dance by Sarah Shaw and Circus Skill sessions led by Emma Bloomfield.

Garner said: “The sessions are going really well and the number of young people turning up is steadily increasing each week.

“It’s great to see everyone trying new things and really enjoying themselves. The aim of them taking part in the forthcoming parades at Hedworthfield and in South Shields.”

The couple have led on a number of carnival-themed projects over the years since setting up their company.

In the past they have played a big part in the South Tyneside parade injecting a hint of carnival fun into the event with a variety of big and bright colourful costumes.

The Friday sessions start at 5pm and cost £1.
