CHAMPION fundraiser Ken Ramsay has gathered more than £10,000 for worthy causes and he’s showing no signs of slowing down.
The 61-year-old bus driver, who has dressed up as Santa while on the road for the past five years, becomes the latest contender in this year’s Best of South Tyneside Awards.
His nomination for the Fundraiser of the Year category said: “He puts a smile on every child’s face.”
Modest Ken was delighted to be nominated and added: “I just do it because I like raising money.”
Even his own battle with cancer in 2013 failed to prevent him from taking his place behind the wheel of his bus in the run-up to the festive season.
Ken has raised money for causes such as MacMillan Cancer Support and CLIC Sargent Cancer Care. He has also taken part in the Wig Wednesday fundraiser and his efforts have already won him one honour. He won a gold award in the Care in the Community category of an award organised by his firm, Stagecoach.
Ken said: “I am over the moon that someone has nominated me.”
He joins an already impressive list of entries for our competition but our search for outstanding contestants is far from over.
We want many more nominations between now and the deadline for entries of Friday, April 10. After that, the judging panel will meet choose a shortlist in each category. Then comes the awards finale. They will culminate in a glittering finals night at the Quality Hotel on June 25.
