A South Tyneside-based communities’ charity is weighing in to support a national recycling initiative – of almost 50 tonnes.
Groundwork South Tyneside and Newcastle (STAN) is backing Recycle Week 2015 – until Sunday – by urging people to do more to help their local environment.
And it has set the perfect example, having diverted 48 tonnes of goods from landfill last year – with an even higher target set for 2015.
It recycles through its Home @ Windmill Warehouse centre in South Shields, and Office @Windmill Warehouse, in Jarrow.
The 12th annual Recycle Week, which is organised by WRAP, a national sustainability organisation, is a celebration of everything about recycling.
It’s based on a partnership between local authorities, retailers, brands, schools, businesses and community groups.
This year’s focus is on raising awareness of items at home that can be recycled by people who have not previously considered recycling.
Andrew Watts, executive director of Groundwork STAN, said: “Individuals and businesses can play their part in making the North East a ‘greener’ place to live by recycling the items they no longer need or use.
“Groundwork offers tremendous support by operating two centres where they can take their unwanted goods for recycling. People can help us by ensuring their disused goods are disposed of appropriately.”
Electrical goods, all UK safety standard tested before being re-sold, are included in items recycled at its Home @ Windmill Warehouse, at Middlefields Industrial Estate.
And at its recently opened Office @ Windmill Warehouse, in Hanlon Court, a range of furniture, including full office sets, bookcases, tables, office chairs and new outdoor and garden furniture made from recycled materials, is for sale.
Stock at both warehouses, which are open from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, is priced to be affordable.
Groundwork STAN also provides an internal recycling service for green-minded companies and can collect paper, cardboard, cans and plastic bottles at competitive rates.
