Youngsters at a primary school in South Tyneside all set the embrace the great outdoors thanks to a cash donation from the community.
Pupils from St Oswald’s Primary Schoo, in Nash Road, South Shields, have been given the chance of outdoor classes after receiving a £1,000 grant from the One Stop Shop’s charitable collection, ‘Carriers for Causes.’
The shop, on Whiteleas Way, South Shields, uses cash from the sale of carrier bags to donate to worthy causes who apply for a grant.
Fundraising coordinator and nursery nurse Sandra Raine, was delighted with the donation which has helped pay for the woodland area.
She said: “One of the grandparents worked at the One Stop Shop and she had told us about the charity run by the store.
“Every 5p that is collected by the carrier bag charge goes back to the community.
“Last summer we applied for the grant and we found out we were successful to get a £1,000 to develop the outdoor area for the foundation stage.
“We have been able to provide children with a mud kitchen, digging pit, fire pit and stage.”
The project was supported by the Groundwork Trust who came out to offer advice on the area before the work was started by a local building company in February this year.
Mrs Raine added: “Children hugely benefit from outdoor learning.
“We do go out in all weathers so the facilities allow us to do that.”
