Virgin Trains East Coast joined in hundreds of fans on Twitter reacting to the news - by offering the coach a trip to his home in York.
Tweeting from its @Virgin_TrainsEC account, it said: "Stevey McLaren! Need out the Toon and a ride home? Check our deals to your home town of York."
