A retired barmaid is toasting her good luck after becoming one of the first people to scoop £1 million on the new Lotto Millionaire Raffle draw.

Mary Galbraith and husband Terry, 73, are celebrating after matching one of 25 winning codes from the draw on Saturday, October 10.

Grandmother of four Mary discovered her new found wealth just two days after her 64th birthday and now plans to splash out on a new bungalow.

Mary, from Jarrow, said: “It was just a normal Friday for me as I went over to do my weekly ticket check and buy my Lucky Dip for next week.

“I handed my ticket over to the cashier, who seemed to take a little longer than usual putting it through the system. When she said she thought I had won, I just assumed it was a small £20 bonus and was surprised when she had to call her manager over for help.

“The manager then asked me to follow him into the back and to take a seat and it was a good job I was sitting because after having a quick chat with Camelot, he told me it looked like I was the winner of £1,000,000!

“It wasn’t until I got home and gave Camelot a call that the panic set in. I literally couldn’t get the words out when I tried to tell my husband and all he was worried about was getting out of the house so he didn’t miss the bus!

“Despite the news, I decided to stick to my usual Friday night plan and go out with the girls, but the word had quickly spread and it felt surreal that so many people were congratulating me already. We couldn’t believe my birthday had passed and I didn’t even realise I was a millionaire!”

As well as her annual holiday to Benidorm and a new home, Mary and Terry are planning to give some of the money to her two children and four grandchildren.

She added: “We’re both quite laid back and not very materialistic so as long as we know our kids and grandkids are all ok, we’ll be happy. We are also really excited to start looking for a brand new home.”

Mary’s winning Lotto Millionaire Raffle code was TEAL 2264 6162 and her winning ticket was purchased at McColls on Norham Terrace, Jarrow.
