Children in need of help

Many have read the report that claims 10% of children in the North East leave primary school without the reading skills they need to succeed in high school.

Beanstalk is a national literacy charity that recruits, vets, trains and supports volunteers to work in primary schools with children who have fallen behind with their reading.

Our vision is that all children and young people will have the essential skills they need to grow up and lead successful lives. Currently we have reading helpers in more than 40 schools across the North East, each helping three children every week to gain confidence and a love of reading.

We have a number of schools in need of new volunteers. Our helpers come from all ages and walks of life but share an understanding of the importance of reading and a commitment to passing that gift on to children in their area. No experience is required as we provide full training, we just ask that reading helpers are able to spare 90 minutes for two afternoons a week during term time.
