'˜Chips and gravy' farewell night proposal for South Shields swimming pool knocked-back on health and safety grounds

It was revealed earlier this week that planning chiefs had officially given the go-ahead for the former Temple Park Swimming Pool to be demolished.

The news brought back waves of memories for Gazette readers who shared tales from their childhood.

Andrew Wright from Jarrow suggested that South Tyneside Council should host a farewell night at the pool off John Reid Road, South Shields, and serve up the centre’s famous gravy and chips.

Mr Wright said: “A recurring comment that seems to crop up is the reminiscence of ‘gravy and chips after a swim’. A memory I too hold close to my heart.

“I would like to put forward a proposal, before demolition begins, that a farewell night be held at the Temple Park Centre to allow the residents of Tyneside to say goodbye in style.

“A final walk round the pool area (health and safety willing) and a meal of gravy and chips. Perhaps local bands could perform with unique acoustics offered by the space.”

Mr Wright went on to suggest that the event could even raise cash for charity.

He added: “Further, I would like to suggest that the evening be charity based, that way not only will it raise awareness of the remaining services and facilities the centre still has to offer, but funds could be generated for local charities.”

A spokesman for South Tyneside Council said: “It is good to see that so many people have fond memories of swimming in Temple Park pool.

“However, as the building has been closed for some time, it has deteriorated and it is now unsafe for public access.”
