Choir is hitting the high notes for charity

Members of the Harton Harmonises recently handed over a cheque to Enid Apsey, chairwoman of fundraising for St Clare’s Hospice in Jarrow.

The ladies, who class themselves as a barber shop chorus, regularly sing throughout the year and donate their appearance fees to charity.

However, they’re now looking for more opportunities to perform and in turn raise lots more cash for good causes.

Beryl Cooke said: “For many years now we have supported the St Clare’s Hospice and lots of other charities too.

“All the money raised from our concerts goes right back to support charities.

“But in order for us to raise money we need more bookings. We have a great programme of popular songs, they’re all sung acappella in four-part harmonies.

“We will sing anywhere and at any time – just give us a call.”

The group has been performing across the region for the last 38 years. Beryl, and the rest of the ladies, are also looking for new members to sign up.

The group rehearses at Talbot Road Methodist Church Hall, every Monday, from 7.15pm to 9.45pm

Beryl said: “We’re always on the lookout for new ladies to join us, we’re a very friendly bunch and we have lots of fun.

“If anyone is interested they should come along to one of our rehearsals to see what we get up to.”
