The official countdown to Christmas has begun as South Shields transforms into a winter wonderland,.

Hundreds turned out for the official festive lights switch-on in King Street this afternoon.

Popstars S Club Party - Bradley, Jo and Tina - helped warm up spectators who braved the freezing weather.

The group entertained the audience with hits including 'Dream Come True' and festive numbers before Santa made an early appearance, much to the delight of youngsters.Live music was also provided by 18-year-old X Factor star Abi Garrido from Jarrow.

South Tynesiders were more than impressed with the festive displays, which complement the dazzling tree lights which have been lighting up Ocean Road in recent months.

Amanada Greenfield, 39, from South Shields said: “I thought they were lovely. I feel all festive now after signing along to all of the Christmas songs, It was fab.”

Jarrow’s Christmas lights were turned on last night and Hebburn’s switch-on will take place on Monday in Fountain Park, on Station Road, between 4pm and 5pm.

The Mayor and Mayoress will be present, and there will be carols around the Christmas tree with St Aloysius School choir and festive music from Hebburn Comprehensive School wind band.
