Coastguard called out to South Shields cliffs twice in twelve hours

A man was helped to safety after concerns for his welfare on a clifftop edge in South Shields, while another was found by police in a separate callout.

People flagged down Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team after spotting the man shortly at Marsden just before 4pm yesterday, Saturday, June 27.

South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade (SSVLB) asked then asked to attend.

A SSVLB spokesperson said: “He was encouraged to come away from the edge and placed in the rescue vehicle to await police, team members talked and reassured him until police arrived.”

In a separate incident, SSVLB and the Coastguard team were asked to help police near to Marsden Grotto following concern for a man just after 4am today.

They could not find any sign of the incident and as they moved down to another part of the coast to carry out checks, heard police had already left the area with the man.
