A GROUP helping South Tyneside’s older residents lead a more active social life is opening its doors to new members.
Winnie Matherson and friends at the Gainsborough Avenue Group, host activities in the community hall, in Winship Close, Whiteleas.
The group – which was forced to relocate from Gainsborough Avenue Day Centre to its new home last year – aims to provide a place for over 55s to meet and socialise.
Chairwoman of the committee Mrs Matherson said: “The group was set up as a way of helping people out of isolation and has been running for nine years now.
“We do lots of different activities including bingo, lunches, fish and chip suppers and organise day trips.
“We have quite a few people who come in to just have a chat with others. For someone on their own to come through the doors it is a big step but we always make people feel welcome.
“We would just ask them to take that first step and come through the doors.”
The group meets every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 9am to 2.30pm and Monday evenings from 5.30pm to 8.30pm.
For information on what the group offers, people are invited to call in.
