Coroner opens investigation into death of woman found in South Tyneside pond

A coroner has confirmed he has opened an investigation into the death of a woman who was found in a pond in South Tyneside.

No date has been set for the opening of an inquest into the death of the woman, who has been identified by police.

She was found in a pond in Temple Memorial Park, in South Shields, on Sunday.

Her name has not yet been released to the public.

A spokesman for the Office of the Coroner for Gateshead and South Tyneside said: "An investigation has been opened, but no date has been set for an inquest.

"We are awaiting further details."

Police were called at about 8am on Sunday morning over concerns a body was in the pond.

Emergency services attended and the body of a woman was recovered.

Inquiries have been carried out and Northumbria Police say there is not believed to be any third party involvement in the death.

A spokesman said a report is being prepared for the coroner.
