A rugby club in South Tyneside is even stronger this year after lifting a Shields Gazette title.

As Jarrovians chairman Brian Berry looked back on the club’s success in our What’s On Where Awards in 2015, he urged people to nominate worthy causes for this year’s competition.

Awards like this and promotion like this is a benefit to the club. It shows to people what is like at a club which is well managed and well run

The rugby club in Marine Drive, on the Lukes Lane Estate in Hebburn, lifted the Social Club of the Year trophy in the contest after Jarrovians was described as outstanding for the warm welcome it gave to both locals and people travelling to the venue from further afield.

Brian said: “We were ecstatic to be selected as the winners. In fact, we were delighted to be nominated.

“Winning the award was something we were not expecting, but we were proud to have the honour.”

And he told how the success was “well received in club. It has impressed a lot of people after we were described as a club which was well managed and well run.”

Jarrovians is now successfully pushing its social side and it is paying dividends. “By getting more people in on the social side, we are getting more players as well,” said Brian.

He urged readers to put in nominations for this year’s What’s On Where Awards and said: “Awards like this and promotion like this are a benefit to the club.

“It shows to people what is like at a club which is well managed and well run.”

Jarrovians was praised for its big-hearted individuals who helped to keep the place in such great condition while doing it in their own time.

We are now on the lookout for another great cause to follow in the Jarrovians footsteps.

Why not put in your own favourites for our competition, which is backed by UK Asbestos Specialists (UKasl).

We want to find the best in South Tyneside and Wearside’s arts, culture, hospitality and leisure scene.

Nominations can be sent in until the deadline of February 1. After that, judges will meet to draw up a shortlist in each category.

The Best Western Roker Hotel will host the finale of our competition – held in association with our weekly entertainments guide, Wow 24/7.
