Members of South Tyneside Council's Place Select Committee will put plans to set up a commission to tackle fly-tipping under scrutiny next week.

The committee will get round the table to debate fly-tipping and waste in a bid to address concerns over the issues.

Councillor Audrey McMillian, Chair of the Place Select Committee at South Tyneside Council, said: “This is a huge issue that covers many areas and as such we must take a measured approach to ensure that we address all of the concerns our residents may have.

“We know that fly-tipping and litter is something that is high on the agenda of our residents and we must do everything that we ca to tackle it – working hand in hand with our partners and local community.

“To take forward the commission we will break down the issue into separate work streams which could include the perception of litter and fly-tipping, the role of the fast food industry and new technology that could help us deal with these issues.”

The council says that littering and fly tipping is not only irresponsible, hazardous and unsightly but is costly to clean up.

They are warning offenders they could face criminal action if they are caught in the act.

Over the past 10 years there has been a 60 per cent reduction in fly tipping incidents.

The commission will look into ways to slash this figure even further.

The meeting gets under way at 10am, on Tuesday 26 July, at the Council Chamber in Jarrow Town Hall.
