Cricket Festival to raise funds for Chloe and Liam Together Forever Trust

A cricketing fundraiser will take place this weekend to celebrate the life of Liam Curry through one of his passions.

Cricketers from across the area are to support the special charity event at Marsden Cricket Club tomorrow in aid of the Chloe & Liam Together Forever Trust.

The trust are holding a Cricket Festival Day in memory of Liam Curry, 19, and his girlfriend Chloe Rutherford, 17, were killed in the Manchester Arena Bomb attack, last May.

Liam, a huge cricket fan, played for Marsden Cricket Club from the age of six and the pair were hugely popular with all who knew them.

A team of current and former Durham County Cricket Club players has been revealed ahead of Sunday’s event.

A Durham XI will take on a Liam’s Legends side from 1pm followed by a match between a Durham Cricket League XI and Marsden’s First XI on Sunday.

Current players Liam Trevaskis, Ryan Davies, Ben Whitehead, Michael Jones and Josh Coughlin head the Durham XI with Second XI head coach Neil Killeen also playing.

Killeen’s former seam bowling partners Callum Thorp and Mark Davies are involved, as well as ex-Durham player Steve Lugsden & Neil’s son, current Durham under-13 player Mitchell.

The event was almost cancelled when the date was chosen to hold games that should have been played on July 7– but were rescheduled because of England’s football World Cup quarter-final.

In an unprecedented move, Durham Cricket League changed the date after it was made aware of what had been planned so the fundraiser could go ahead this weekend.

Alan Stewart, secretary of Durham Cricket League, said at the time: “When we set the date initially for the rescheduled games, we had not realised just how big the event at Marsden was going to be.

“When we realised there was a league 11 side playing and there would have been quite a number of club players involved in that day, we took the decision to move the rescheduled games to the Bank Holiday Monday, to enable the day to go ahead at Marsden.”

At the event, there will be an auction, raffle, BBQ, cake sale, a sponsored leg wax, VIP hot tubs and much more on the day, with all proceeds going to the Chloe & Liam Together Forever Trust.
