£100,000 cannabis farm set up in empty house

BRAZEN thieves set up a £100,000 cannabis farm in a South Shields house while it was empty.

The owners were stunned to find almost 100 mature cannabis plants in the property in Milner Street, South Shields, when they returned.

Police believe someone broke in some time in the last four months and took advantage of the fact it was unoccupied to start cultivating the plants.

One fully matured cannabis plant can produce enough of the class B drug to be worth up to £1,000.

Officers are keen to speak to anyone who may have seen people coming and going from the address during that time.

The owners also reported that several items had been stolen, including an original print of artist Bob Olley’s famous ‘Westoe Netty’ picture, worth £500.

A remote control helicopter that was still in its box and a green Siemens vacuum cleaner were also stolen.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, ext 69191.
