Arrest made after armed robbery at South Shields shop

A man has been arrested following an armed robbery at a shop in South Shields in which hundreds of pounds and bottles of alcohol were taken.

Between 9.30pm and 9.45pm on Saturday night, two men entered the Talbot Discount store, in Talbot Road, brandishing batons.

They made threats to an elderly shopkeeper before they stole between £500 and £600, a bottle of vodka and a bottle of sambuca and fled the scene.

The shopkeeper was unhurt but left extremely shaken by the incident.

A customer who tried to help the shopkeeper is believed to have suffered a hand injury during a scuffle, after which he was taken to hospital for treatment.

Police later arrested a 29-year-old man on suspicion of robbery and he remains in police custody.
