POLICE have sealed off a back lane in South Shields after the discovery of a body.
Officers are making door-to-door inquiries in the Reed Street, Dacre Street and Egglesfield Road area in Chichester, South Shields.
Northumbria Police said officers were called to the rear of houses in Dacre Street at 7.34am this morning.
They found the body of a man lying on the ground. He was declared dead at the scene.
A spokesman said: “Officers have set up a cordon at the location. The death is being treated as unexplained at this time and enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances.”
Police are appealing for witnesses anyone who was in the area and who may have any information is asked to contact police.
One witness said the body had been found next to a children’s play area.
Another resident said: “The first I knew of the incident was when police called at 8am this morning. I looked out of my back window and there was a body in the back lane.
“I don’t know what’s happened but there was a bit a of disturbance in the street at about 11pm last night.
“I don’t know if the two are connected.”
