A THIEF landed himself in court after a keen-eyed customer spotted him snatching coffee from a South Tyneside store.

Stephen Mason was spotted stealing five jars of Nescafe from Bargain Booze, in Prince Edward Road, South Shields, on December 10, last year.

The 46-year-old pleaded guilty to a charge of shop theft when he appeared before South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court.

Justin Gibson, prosecuting, said: “A male was seen by a customer stealing coffee from the store.

“Staff viewed CCTV and Mason was seen selecting five jars of coffee before concealing them in a carrier bag.

“He then left without offering to pay.”

Christopher Brown, defending, said: “At the time of the offence he was homeless. He stole the coffee to sell on, so he had some money.”

Mason, of Dean Road, South Shields, was ordered to pay £14.95 compensation to the store.
