Commuter hit with £250 court costs for parking over pavement near a South Tyneside Metro station

A commuter has been hit with fines and court costs of £250 for causing an obstruction by parking on a kerb near a South Tyneside Metro station.

Elizabeth Convery, 64, was penalised for leaving her Skoda at Gretna Drive, next to the Brockley Whins train stop, South Shields, while she took a ride on January 18.

Convery, of Duchess Crescent East, Jarrow, then failed to reply to police correspondence which required her to identify the driver responsible.

She appeared at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court to appeal against the conviction she received in her absence for the latter offence.

Magistrates agreed to reopen the case against her – and quashed the conviction on the grounds a police letter had been seen to her previous address.

But they fined her £133 for the parking offence and ordered her to pay £85 court costs and a £32 victim surcharge.

Convery, who defended herself in court, pleaded guilty to a charge of causing an obstruction with her vehicle.
