A RECOVERING heroin addict has been given a chance to prove his determination to kick the habit by magistrates.

Stephen Robert Scott, 46, of Westoe Road, South Shields, admitted two shoplifting offences at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

The court heard that one of the offences had been committed within days of Scott being given a drug treatment order.

David Forrester, defending, said: “There are clearly substance issues that he is dealing with, is trying to deal with or has had to deal with.

“If someone is dealing with a significant heroin addiction, it is not something you can just click your fingers and expect to stop immediately.”

Mr Forrester asked for sentencing to be deferred for a month or two to give Scott a chance to comply, and his request was granted.

“I am not suggesting he has forever to prove himself,” said Mr Forrester.

“He has to start now.”

After hearing from probation officers that Scott had been complying with the treatment order, the magistrates agreed to defer sentencing until Thursday, January 15.
