POLICE are hunting a burglar who threatened the occupant of a house in South Shields with a gun.

The man entered a house in Canterbury Street at 5.19pm yesterday and threatened the occupant with what is described as a handgun before making off.

The intruder is described as a white man, around 50-years-old, of slim build and wearing dark blue jeans with a brown jacket and dark woollen hat.

Det Sgt David Wakefield said: “Enquiries into the incident are ongoing and we’re keen to speak to anyone who may have been in the area at the time or have information to contact us straight away.

“At this stage we do not believe this was a random attack but was directed at a specific individual, who no longer lives in the area.

“We recognise the local community may be concerned about this incident and we have extra officers in the area to offer reassurance.”

Anyone with any information into the incidents is asked to contact police on 101 ext 69191 quoting reference 878 13/05/15 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
