Hebburn man charged with robbery at South Shields store

A Hebburn man is due to appear in court, charged with armed robbery at a South Shields store.

Malcolm James Simmons, 30, of Hedgeley Road, has been charged with one count of robbery, one of possessing an offensive weapon and one of handling stolen goods.

The charges follow a raid at the Talbot Discount Store in Talbot Road, South Shields, on Saturday.

Two men entered the store brandishing batons and made threats to the elderly shopkeeper before stealing cash and bottles of spirits.

The shopkeeper was unhurt but left extremely shaken by the incident.

Simmons was due to appear before South Tyneside Magistrates in connection with the incident today.
