Karl Molyneaux tried to kill the mum-of-two with nine knife blows in her kitchen then left her bleeding heavily on the floor after she told him she wanted to spend a night alone with her children.
He then fled to a nearby petrol station where he called the authorities and told them: "I have just stabbed my girlfriend.
"She will need an ambulance."

Hide AdWhen he's asked if she is bleeding heavily he replies: "I don't know. I just ran."
He added: "We just had an argument so I just snapped."
When asked whereabouts he stabbed her he says: "Near the neck."
Molyneaux, 53, turned his girlfriend’s life “upside down” after the attack on the night of Wednesday, March 11, which he carried out while her two teenage children were upstairs.
Molyneaux left her bleeding heavily on the floor after inflicting multiple stab wounds to her neck and arm and fled, calling police from a petrol station to confess his crime.

Hide AdShe was found by her children and needed life-saving surgery to what police have called “catastrophic injuries”.
In a statement, his victim, who had known her attacker for a decade before they started a relationship, said: “I am extremely upset and in disbelief that Karl has done this to me – I cannot believe he is capable of this.
“I am worried about my children as they were in my house at the time and I had to ask them for help. I tried to help myself but I was in so much pain.

Detective Sergeant Gaye Martin, of Northumbria Police, said: “This was an absolutely appalling attack as Molyneaux, a man with no previous offending history, attempted to kill someone who he should have been caring for.
"His actions were cold and sinister.
“The victim is incredibly fortunate to be alive – and I’d like to praise her for the amazing bravery and strength that she has shown throughout this case.
"I have no doubt whatsoever that the actions of her children that night saved their mum’s life and they should be very proud of that.
