A man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving after a police chase in South Tyneside today.

Officers were called to Sea Road, South Shields, at around 12.15pm, following reports of a car being driven “erratically.”

Police arrived, and after a short chase the driver was stopped on Stanhope Road, South Shields, close to the West Park.

One motorist who saw the commotion on Stanhope Road, said: “I didn’t know what was happening. There was a silver car in the road and police cars all around it.

“A man was taken from the car, handcuffed and led away by officers.”

A spokesman for the police said: “Police were called to Sea Road, South Shields, to a man driving erratically a silver Volkswagen Bora.

“Officers attended and after a short pursuit the car was stopped in Stanhope Road.

“A 44-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.”
