The man is due to appear at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court later this year.

It follows a crackdown on car crime in the Hebburn area with officers being made aware of some concerns about individuals targeting unlocked cars since the start of the year.

Northumbria Police Inspector Denise Easdon, said: “By chatting with the communities we serve, we became aware of some concerns about car-related crime under the cover of darkness.

“As a result, I set my team out to get their hands on CCTV in a bid to gain a clearer picture and identify potential suspects.

“After speaking with one resident about a particular report, we carried out enquiries and were able to bring one man into custody.

“He has now been charged with vehicle interference and will appear before the courts later this year.”

Inspector Easdon added that this charge does not mean the end of police efforts: “ We will continue to take action against anybody we suspect is involved in this type of criminality and a visible policing presence will continue to patrol in the area.”
