Man arrested over suspected arson after Jarrow flat blaze

A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of arson after a flat fire in South Tyneside.

Firefighters were called to an upstairs flat in Buxton Close, Jarrow, at 4.40pm yesterday.

The alarm was raised by neighbours who saw smoke billowing from the windows.

Fire damage was caused to furniture in the living room while the remainder of the property was damaged by smoke.

Firefighters from Hebburn were at the property for almost two hours tackling the blaze. No one was in the property at the time.

Police were called to the address.

A 53-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life and is currently helping police with inquiries.

Investigations are ongoing and police are keen to speak to anyone with information or who was in the area at the time and may have seen someone arriving at, or leaving the flat, or noticed anything suspicious.
