A man has been charged with the attempted murder of a police officer following an incident in Newcastle.

At 6.24am on Thursday, November 12, an officer responded to a report of an assault on a woman in East Denton.

When he arrived at the scene a man ran off and the officer gave chase.

He eventually caught a man on the footbridge over the A1 and while in the process of making the arrest the man then allegedly tried to push the officer over the side of the bridge onto the motorway below.

Thankfully, the officer was able to safely detain the man and he was arrested.

The 28-year-old was later charged with attempt murder of a police officer, assaulting a police officer and assault ABH.

He will appear at Newcastle Magistrates’ Court on November 13.
