Man in court after gas scare sparks evacuation in South Shields

A MAN arrested after homes in South Tyneside were evacuated following a gas scare earlier this week has had his case transferred to Newcastle Crown Court.

Police were called to Trinity Walk in Laygate, South Shields, just before 6pm on Tuesday and evacuated 34 properties.

We attended the street and carried out saftey checks, workers then capped off the gas supply to a damaged meter.

Michael Bays, 25, of Trinity Walk, South Shields, appeared before South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court today charged with criminal damage and possession of a controlled drug.

Bays, who did not enter pleas, was granted conditional bail.

His case transferred to Newcastle Crown Court for Thursday, March 19.
