A thief who took a schoolboy’s mobile phone at a supermarket checkout has been ordered to pay a £300 court bill.
Damien Kelly snatched the item when the 15-year-old boy left it behind at the till at Asda, in Station Road, Hebburn, on May 11 – and denied the crime when the youngster returned to the store.
However the 20-year-old was caught when CCTV footage was later viewed.
Rebecca Laverick, prosecuting, said: “CCTV footage was viewed which established the defendant took the phone and let the store with it.
“He was arrested and admitted stealing the phone and selling it on for £20.”
Valerie Bell, defending, said: “He has made full admissions and is not heavily convicted.”
Kelly, of Collingwood Street, Hebburn, must pay a £100 fine, £50 compensation and a £150 criminal courts charge.
