A MAN threatened his wife with a pool cue during a pub row after she told him she was in love with one of his workmates, a court heard.
Michael Dellin’s wife Alix announced that she was leaving him while they were out with other family and friends at the Jester pub in Whiteleas, South Shields.
Magistrates in South Shields heard that the 47-year-old builder lifted a pool cue in a threatening manner during an angry altercation with his wife of 18 years, but he did not strike her with it.
The couple’s daughter, aged 16 at the time, was forced to witness the dispute at the Tasmania Road pub.
Dellin, of Stoker Avenue, South Shields, admitted a charge of common assault without physical contact.
Keith Laidlaw, prosecuting, said: “The injured party had been married to Dellin for 18 years at the time of the incident. They have a daughter, now 17.
“On July 11, they decided to go to the Jester pub with some friends and their daughter for her birthday.
“Mrs Dellin had become close to a colleague of her husband. He was at the gathering, and he and the injured party were texting each other during the evening.
“Dellin’s daughter got upset and told her mother she knew she was texting the other man, and she said she would tell her father if she didn’t.”
He said Mrs Dellin then told her husband she was leaving him and in love with the other man.
“Dellin went ballistic. He picked up the pool cue in a threatening manner.”
Christopher Brown, defending, said: “He raised a pool cue in a threatening manner, and she came at him with a chair.
“It was a storm that blew up temporarily. Words were exchanged. It all happened in a flash. There was no actual physical assault.
“In the upset of the moment, he reacted the way he did. The next day, she packed her bags and left.”
The court heard that the couple are now going through divorce proceedings.
Dellin was given a six-month conditional discharge by magistrates and ordered to pay court costs of £85, plus a £15 victim surcharge.
He was also given a one-year restraining order barring him from contacting his estranged wife.
