A SOUTH Tyneside man who made and distributed indecent images of children and pretended to be a child in an internet chat room has escaped jail.

Police came across the sick material when they searched the home of 37-year-old Paul Scott’s mother in South Shields.

Jolyon Perks, prosecuting, told Newcastle Crown Court there were 31 indecent images of children aged between 12 and 14 – ranging from category A to category C.

He said: “Police attended an address as they had been informed about indecent images linked to the house.

“It was his mother’s address and the defendant was arrested and interviewed. He did not speak during his interview.

“Forensic scientists found 788 images on a hard drive and 31 were found to be indecent. The images were one category A image, two category B and 28 category C.”

He added: “One of the images was distributed to someone through an online chat room where the defendant was impersonating being a child.

“Another image showed sexual activity between a child and an adult male.”

Scott, of Galsworthy Road, South Shields, admitted making, distributing and possessing indecent images of children at a plea and case hearing.

Judge Robert Adams said: “Thirty-one images were found to be indecent. You pretended that one of the images was your sister while on an internet chat room and claimed to another online user that you engaged in sexual activity with her.

“You have no previous convictions and you have expressed remorse for what you have done.

“You also pleaded guilty at the first available opportunity and look to be someone with good character.

“I am under the opinion there was no aggravating factors and I think there is clear room for a non-custodial sentence.”

Scott was given a three-year community order with supervision, ordered to sign the sex offenders register and was told he has to attend sex offenders’ group meetings.

David Lamb, defending, said: “The defendant has expressed full remorse for what he has done and wants to rebuild his life after coping with depression that made him take the actions he did.”
